OXFORD — Mississippi State freshman Chris Jones has been interviewed by the NCAA about Ole Miss’ recruiting of him, CBSSports.com is reporting this evening.

“Jones’ mother, Mary Woodhouse, said she did not know about an NCAA interview and she never noticed anything suspicious regarding Ole Miss’ recruitment of Jones,” CBSSports.com’s Jeremy Fowler wrote. “She called the family’s visit to Oxford “very nice. They were nice to us,” and discussed Ole Miss’ commitment to academics.”

Jones, a five-star prospect from Houston, was the subject of a heated recruiting battle between Mississippi State and Ole Miss over the course of the month leading up to National Signing Day, leading to a weekend where he and his family visited both campuses. In the end, Jones ended up sticking to his original commitment and signed with the Bulldogs.

This is the second story in less than a week concerning the NCAA looking at past Ole Miss recruits. The school announced this week that the NCAA found no wrongdoing in its recruitment of C.J. Johnson in 2011 (when Houston Nutt was still coach).

10:05 P.M. UPDATE

Just talked to Houston coach William Cook, who said he was not aware of any such interview.

“The first I’ve heard of it,” Cook said.

Cook said he has not been contacted by the NCAA, and does not know of anything concerning Jones’ recruitment that would have triggered an interview.

So far attempts to contact an Ole Miss spokesman have not been returned.
